Position Summary : Under the supervision of the Site Administrator and Manager of
School Nursing, the traveling nurse works with students and the entire school
community supporting health needs such as medication administration, first aid,
immunization compliance, and workers compensation documentation, etc. Computer use for tasks such as email, submitting attachments, reports, online supply orders,etc.
Minimum Qualifications :
Education:
• Associate’s degree in nursing ; must complete bachelor’s degree within ten (10)
years from the initial issuance of Oklahoma teaching certificate
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, etc.:
• Licensed Registered Nurse
• Oklahoma School Nurse Certification
• Valid certification in First Aid/CPR/AED
Experience:
• Two (2) years’ school nurse experience a plus
• Two (2) years’ supervisory experience
Other:
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Office Suite
• Bilingual in Spanish a pl us
Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of

School Health M anag ement:
• Cooperates with school personnel in identifying and meeting physical, social, and
emotional needs of school children
• Promotes and maintains a safe and healthful environment for students, staff, and
families
• Counsel s with students, parents, a nd school personnel regarding health
problems and health behavior
• Collects and assesses health status data using the student, family, health care
professional, and health assistant; methods of data collection may include
observation, screening, physical assessment, intervention, review of records and
reports
• Provide s first aid and emergency care to students and staff, notifying parents,
legal guardian(s) or person respons ible for student’s care, as indicated
• Organize s and conduct s screening programs, i.e., vision, hearing, height, weight,
scoliosis, and communicable diseases
• Refers students, parents, and staff to appropriate community health resources as
needed
• Work s with school personnel and health assistants to ensure stud ents meet State
immunization requirements
• Monitor status of student immunizations
• Assume s responsibility for the maintenance, administration, and control of
medications, including narcotics
• Make s home visits as needed
• Assure s school accident report s are filed as needed and assist s school
personnel with corrective action as appropriate
• Keep s accurate and up -to-date list of children with special health needs
• Consult s with physician and other health care professionals as neede d
• Provide s an environm ent conducive to privacy, confidentiality, and efficiency
• Formulate s nursing diagnosis based on comprehensive assessment and
appropriate nursing theory
• Develop s, implement s, and evaluate s Individual Health Plans for students with
health needs
Clinic Management:
• Maintain s accurate, up -to-date health records and record -keeping materials
• Observe s schedules, policies and procedures as directed by Health and
Wellness
• Systematically record s data on cumulative health records and interpret according
to norms
• Makes referrals as appropriate
• Supervise s and assist s in teaching health policies, procedures, and protocols to
health assistants and designated employee
School/Community Relations:
• Demonstrate s knowledge of available community services by making referrals as
appropriate
• Maintain s open lines of communication with students, school, personnel, families,
and the community to address questions and concerns about school health
• Assist s in identification of students at risk for physic al and psychosocial problems
• Communicate s health needs to other school personnel as appropriate
• Report s incidents of suspected child abuse, according to State Law and TPS
policy, and assist s school perso nnel and administrators as needed
• Acts as health advocate on behalf of the student and family as appropriate
Health Education:
• Assist s students, families, and school personnel in the attainment of
developmentally appropriate health goals through health education and
counseling
• Consult s with staff i n the development and implementation of new or revised
health curricula
• Promote s both formal and informal health education for students, parents, and
staff
• Develop s a yearly health education plan that incorporates all grade levels
• Provide s health coun seling and refer s to appropriate professionals as needed
• Conduct s in-service programs for school personnel
• Assist s school personnel in obtaining health materials, supplies, and equipment
• Provide s instruction in proper use, care, storage, and protectio n of equipment
• Take s an active role in developing health related curriculum and instruction of
students in this curriculum, as well as State mandated health education, i.e.,
HIV/AIDS
