Position Summary: The Painter/Plasterer Craftsperson performs skilled painting, staining, and plastering work to maintain, protect, and improve the appearance of district facilities. This position works independently to complete assigned work orders, applying knowledge of surface preparation methods, coating applications, and finishing techniques. This role requires knowledge of various paints, varnishes, stains, enamels, and lacquers and their appropriate application to interior and exterior surfaces, trim, and fixtures. The Painter/Plasterer Craftsperson coordinates with other maintenance shops as needed and reports labor, material costs, and work order information to the Foreperson daily. This position is part of the Skilled Trades career track within the Maintenance department. This position operates with a high degree of independence and is expected to complete assignments with minimal supervision. Key Functions: • Surface Preparation and Coating Application • Painting, Staining, and Finishing Work • Work Order Execution and Documentation • Safety, Cleanup, and Equipment Maintenance • Cross -Shop Coordination and Support Minimum Qualifications: Education: ● High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required ● Completion of a trade school or vocational program in painting, finishing, or related field preferred Experience: • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in commercial or institutional painting and plastering • Experience working in school or public facility environments preferred • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred Licenses and Certifications: • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license with no restrictions that would preclude driving on the job required • Lead- based paint awareness or abatement certification preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Knowledge of various paints, varnishes, stains, enamels, lacquers, and their appropriate application methods • Knowledge of surface preparation techniques for a variety of materials including wood, metal, drywall, and masonry • Proficiency with painting tools and equipment including brushes, rollers, sprayers, and mechanical lifts • Ability to match colors, mix coatings, and select appropriate materials for specific surfaces and conditions • Knowledge of plastering and drywall repair techniques • Understanding of applicable safety standards, SDS requirements, and proper handling of chemicals and coatings • Strong organizational and time management skills • Ability to plan and coordinate work schedules to complete assignments independently • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, school staff, and other trades personnel • Proficiency with CMMS software and basic computer applications including Microsoft Office Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions. • Perform skilled painting, staining, and finishing work on interior and exterior surfaces across district facilities • Prepare surfaces for painting by scraping, sanding, washing, patching, and priming as required • Apply paints, varnishes, stains, enamels, and lacquers using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment • Perform plastering, drywall patching, and wall repair as needed prior to finishing • Protect non -removable fixtures, flooring, and adjacent surfaces using masking tape, paper, and drop cloths • Complete all assigned work orders in a timely manner and in accordance with district standards • Record and report labor hours, material costs, and relevant work order information to the Foreperson daily • Coordinate with other maintenance shops as needed to complete cross -trade projects • Select appropriate materials and techniques based on surface type, environmental conditions, and project requirements • Follow all safety procedures, district policies, and applicable OSHA requirements • Clean and maintain all painting equipment, tools, and spray apparatus after each use • Properly dispose of waste materials, solvents, and chemicals in compliance with environmental and district regulations • Inspect completed work for quality, accuracy, and adherence to specifications • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all job sites • Respond to emergency maintenance requests as directed • Transport materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites using district vehicles • Provide guidance and support to less experienced painting staff as needed • Coordinate with school administrators and site staff to minimize disruption during work • Ensure proper storage and handling of paints, solvents, chemicals, and equipment in compliance with SDS requirements • Participate in department meetings, safety trainings, and professional development as required • Operate mechanical lifts, scaffolding, and ladders safely in accordance with district and OSHA standards • Perform other duties, tasks, or services consistent with this position as assigned Customer Contacts: ● Internal: Maintenance staff, Forepersons, and district Facilities leadership ● External : School site administrators, staff, contracted vendors, and community partners Supervisory Responsibility: • This role does not directly supervise any employees • May provide informal guidance to less experienced painting staff Working and Physical Conditions: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this position. Exposure to the following conditions may range from rare to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.  • Work performed in school buildings, district facilities, and outdoor environments • Frequent travel between district sites using assigned vehicles • Exposure to paint fumes, dust, solvents, and chemical vapors in enclosed and open environments • Work in confined spaces, tunnels, attics, and areas requiring use of ladders, scaffolding, or mechanical lifts • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolds and work at heights • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment frequently up to 50 pounds, occasionally more with assistance • Use of personal protective equipment including respirators, eye protection, and skin protection as required • Extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, and reaching, including overhead work • Potential exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, and lead- based paint in older facilities • Must be available to work overtime, evenings, and weekends without advance notice as required Tulsa Public Schools is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team of individuals who contribute to the district's mission with their talents, skills, and energy.
