Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Site Administrator and Manager of School Nursing, the school nurse (LPN) works with students and the entire school community supporting health needs such as medication administration, first aid, immunization compliance, and workers compensation documentation, etc. Computer use for tasks such as email, submitting attachments, reports, online supply orders, accessing forms, etc. Minimum Qualifications: Education: • Graduate of a Licensed Practical Nursing program from vocational or other technical school Experience: • Two (2) years of nursing experience • School nursing, pediatric nursing, or related nursing specialty experience preferred Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, Etc.: • Valid, unrestricted license for practical nursing from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing • Knowledge of fundamental nursing concepts, practices, and procedures. • Possess or ability to obtain First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 60 days of hire • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Office Suite • Bilingual in Spanish a plus Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. School Health Management • Perform s nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse • Perform s delegated nursing care skills as appropriate for a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in compliance with the Oklahoma Nurse Practice Act and as assigned by the RN • Collaborates with school personnel in identifying and meeting physical, social, and emotional needs of school children • Promotes and maintains a safe and healthy environment for students, staff, and families • In collaboration with the registered nurse, counsels with students, parents, and school personnel regarding health concerns and health behavior • Collects health status data using student, family, and healthcare professional ; methods of data collection may include observation, screening, physical assessment, intervention, and review of records and reports • Provides first aid and emergency care to students and staff, notifying parents/legal guardians or person responsible for student’s care as indicated • Conducts screenings such as vision, hearing, pediculosis, etc. • Monitor s status of student immunizations and work with school personnel and RN to ensure students meet State immunization requirements • Responsible for maintaining, administering, and documenting scheduled and PRN medications • Make s home visits as needed • Assures school accident reports are filed as need and assists school personnel with corrective action as appropriate • Keeps accurate and up -to-date list of students with special health needs • In collaboration with the RN, consults with physician and other healthcare professionals as needed • Provides an environment conducive to privacy, confidentiality, and efficiency Clinic Management : • Maintains accurate, up -to-date health records and record -keeping materials • Observes schedules, policies, and procedures as directed by Health and Wellness • Systematically records data on cumulative health records and interprets according to norms • Assist s RN in teaching health policies, procedures, and protocols to health assistants and designated employees School/Community Relations: • Demonstrates knowledge of available community services by making referrals as appropriate • Maintains open lines of communication with students, school personnel, families, and the community to address questions and concerns about school health • Assists in identification of students as risk for physical and psychosocial problems • Communicates health needs to other school personnel as appropriate • Reports incidents of suspected child abuse, according to state law and TPS policy and assists school personnel and administrators as needed • Acts as health advocate on behalf of students and families as appropriate Other: • Performs other appropriate tasks, duties, or services consistent with this position as assigned by the registered nurse, site administrator, or manager of school nursing Skills and Abilities Required: The following characteristics and physical skills are important for the successful performance of assigned duties. • Ability to reason, prioritize, and tirage health related situations • Ability to seek assistance and make appropriate contacts • Ability to adhere to administrative hierarchy • Ability to work collaboratively with others on a team and across disciplines • Enthusiasm for community work and health promotion • Attention to detail and a conscientious attitude • Ability to maintain a positive working relationship with school personnel, students, and families. • Time management and organizational skills • Ability to perform under stress and deescalate stressful situations while adapting to urgent/emergent situations Customer Contacts: • Internal: TPS District Employees • External: Students, parents, community members, partnered vendors, local and state agencies Supervisory Responsibility: • None Working Conditions: Exposure to the following situations may range from rare to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable. • Physical requirements consistent with an office setting • Occasional to frequent travel to dis trict and non -district sites Tulsa Public Schools is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team of individuals who contribute to the district's mission with their talents, skills, and energy.
