Position Summary: The Sheet Metal Apprentice participates in a structured apprenticeship program focused on sheet metal fabrication, HVAC support, and mechanical systems maintenance. This position works under the direction of licensed Journeypersons and the Foreperson whil e progressing toward State of Oklahoma Mechanical Journeyperson licensure with a sheet metal endorsement. The apprentice is responsible for learning all procedural matters related to mechanical codes, local and federal regulations, sheet metal layout and fabrication, ventilation systems, and safety requirements. The apprentice must demonstrate continued improvement in skill and knowledge to advance. During each of the first three years of employment, the apprentice must pass both written and practical application examinations to have their contract r enewed. At the end of three years, the apprentice must pass the State Mechanical Journeyperson examination to obtain licensure. Failure to pass any required examination will result in contract non -renewal. Key Functions: • Apprenticeship Training and Skill Development • Sheet Metal Fabrication and Installation • Safety, Code Compliance, and Regulatory Adherence • Work Order Execution and Documentation • Cross -Shop Coordination and Support Minimum Qualifications: Education: ● High school diploma or equivalent required ● Completion of a vocational or technical program in sheet metal, HVAC, or related field preferred Experience: • No minimum experience required; this is an entry -level training position • Knowledge of or experience with roofing, metal roofs, gutters, ventilation, or HVAC systems preferred • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred Licenses and Certifications: • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license with no restrictions that would preclude driving on the job required • Must obtain and maintain a current and valid State of Oklahoma Mechanical Apprentice card Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, layout, and installation techniques • Ability to read and understand blueprints and mechanical drawings • Willingness to learn mechanical codes, city codes, and applicable safety requirements • Ability to safely work with sharp metals, fabricated metals, and large pieces of sheet metal • Ability to see color accurately for material identification and quality purposes • Knowledge of or willingness to learn ventilation systems, exhaust fans, and HVAC components • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail • Ability to plan and coordinate work schedules to complete assignments with limited supervision • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, licensed tradespeople, and school staff • Proficiency with or willingness to learn CMMS software, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace Responsibilities and Essential Functions: The following duties are representative of performance expectations. A reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions. • Learn and perform sheet metal fabrication, layout, and installation under the direction of licensed tradespeople • Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of ventilation systems, exhaust fans, gutters, and ductwork • Assist with roofing repairs and metal roof maintenance as assigned • Perform preventive maintenance on district vehicles and maintain daily equipment cleanliness • Ensure all work is consistent with specifications and meets or exceeds city and state codes • Complete all assigned work orders in a timely manner and in accordance with district standards • Record and report labor hours, material costs, and relevant work order information to the Foreperson daily • Coordinate with other maintenance shops as needed to complete cross -trade projects • Comply with all local and federal regulations, mechanical codes, and safety requirements • Enforce all SDS requirements and applicable state and city building codes • Maintain training documentation and progress records as required by the apprenticeship program • Pass required written and practical examinations annually to maintain contract eligibility • Clean equipment, job areas, and properly dispose of waste materials • Follow all safety procedures, district policies, and applicable OSHA requirements • Respond to emergency maintenance requests as directed • Transport materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites using district vehicles • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all job sites • Participate in department meetings, safety trainings, and professional development as required • Remain informed of current equipment technology, code changes, and industry best practices • Coordinate with school administrators and site staff to minimize disruption during work • Maintain and care for all tools, vehicles, and equipment assigned to the shop • Perform other duties, tasks, or services consistent with this position as assigned Customer Contacts: ● Internal: Maintenance staff, Forepersons, licensed Journeypersons, and district Facilities leadership ● External : School site administrators, staff, contracted vendors, and regulatory agencies Supervisory Responsibility: • This role does not directly supervise any employees • Works under the direction of licensed Journeypersons and the Foreperson Working and Physical Conditions: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this position. Exposure to the following conditions may range from rare to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.  • Work performed in school buildings, district facilities, rooftops, and outdoor construction environments • Frequent travel between district sites using assigned vehicles • Exposure to construction and mechanical environments including noise, dust, and temperature extremes • Work on rooftops, at elevated heights, and in confined spaces • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolds and work at heights including ceilings and roofs • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 pounds unassisted • Use of personal protective equipment as required by job conditions and district safety policies • Risk of cuts and injury from sharp metals and fabrication tools • Frequent physical activity including standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and extended periods of outdoor work • Must be available to work overtime, evenings, and weekends without advance notice as required Tulsa Public Schools is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team of individuals who contribute to the district's mission with their talents, skills, and energy.
